Transforming Neighborhoods from Disinvestment to Choice
Since 2010, HUD’s Choice Neighborhoods Initiative has provided a holistic framework for transforming neighborhoods that have experienced disinvestment into vibrant, thriving communities.

Through UDA’s Listening, Testing, and Deciding process, residents, cities, and housing authorities in 14 communities have secured $29–$50M in Implementation Grants—funding mixed-income housing, inviting public spaces, public art, local business growth, and expanded opportunities for families.

What began with a Kodak heiress’s gift led to a model for freeway removal. The Strong and its partners transformed the Inner Loop into the Neighborhood of Play—a vibrant district that relinks downtown to city neighborhoods and supports the Museum of Play. 

Long known as a hub for aerospace and high-tech innovation, Huntsville is now embracing a new chapter with the creation of MidCity — a vibrant, walkable urban center rising from a former mall site. MidCity blends industrial heritage with placemaking, creating a dynamic destination for work, play, and connection.

Although the last chapter is yet to be written, both former and new residents are returning to “find the Town of Paradise to be all its name implies.”
